Tobacco industry now in China's sights
Tax concessions create a perverse incentive for local governments to encourage tobacco growing over other agricultural activities, a commentator wrote in The Lancet, noting also that sponsorship by the tobacco industry extends to schools.
“One in four adults in China are aware of the health risks of tobacco use, and an even smaller proportion of current users wish to stop smoking,” the article said.
“This lack of awareness is widespread and includes male healthcare professionals, 40% of whom currently smoke.”
