Tobacco industry taking over e-cigs, WHO told

In a letter sent to WHO director-general Dr Margaret Chan, the expert group said tobacco companies are rapidly taking over the e-cigarette market and misleading the public with unsubstantiated claims of their safety and efficacy.

The group have urged the WHO not to buy into the industry’s “well documented strategy of presenting itself as a partner" in implementing harm reduction strategies.

"Ignoring the link between electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) and the tobacco industry is overlooking the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control parties’ legal obligation to protect government policies against tobacco industry interference," the letter said.
