True tale of one woman’s fight for justice - The Whistleblower (MA15+)

THIS well-intentioned film blows the cover on human trafficking in post-war Bosnia.

It is based on the real-life experiences of Kathryn Bolkovac (Weisz), a Nebraskan policewoman who takes up a UN post in Bosnia monitoring domestic violence.

Bolkovac is contracted to a private company supplying personnel to the UN forces. She gradually becomes aware of extensive trafficking in young women and begins to suspect the complicity of some of her colleagues. Within the UN, peacekeepers have diplomatic immunity and therefore cannot be prosecuted.

Bolkovac’s initial success in prosecuting domestic violence brings her to the attention of Madeleine Rees (Redgrave), who is head of the United Nations Human Rights Commission.

Rees is as keen as Bolkovac to expose the sordid trade in young women.

When Bolkovac encounters a badly beaten young kidnapping victim, Raya (Dondurache), she urges her to testify.
