An unglamorous vocation

For Dr Simon Holliday, a GP and addiction specialist based in Taree, the relationship between pain and opiates has not changed a great deal since the 19th century.

Back then, morphine was advertised as an over-the-counter treatment for teething children.

“If your child was teething you would give them some morphine syrup, and if the baby complained it was given more and more, at times with fatal consequences,” Dr Holliday says.
