AUSTRALIA has the among the world's highest concentrations of clinics offering unproven stem cell treatments, according to researchers who are calling for the closure of a legal loophole that has fostered their spread.

The researchers scoured the web and found 19 businesses offering unproven stem cell-based treatments in Australia. That equates to 8.1 per 10 million people - more than the US (six per 10 million), which leads the world with 187 clinics.
