Vaccine safety system needs major overhaul: report

AN INDEPENDENT report into the 2010 unexplained adverse reactions to seasonal influenza vaccination in children has called for a major overhaul of vaccine safety monitoring in Australia.

The report, commissioned by the Federal Department of Health and Ageing and written by former Commonwealth Chief Medical Officer Professor John Horvath, found the response by Australian health  authorities was hampered by delays in reporting adverse events and poor communication between jurisdictions.
