Warning: Morning-after pill won’t work in heavier women

The story broke in the US on Monday that HRA Pharma, the French manufacturer of the morning-after pill NorLevo (levonorgestrel 750µg), was changing NorLevo’s package information to reflect new weight limits, according to media reports.

HRA Pharma scientists discovered that NorLevo began losing its effectiveness in women who weighed 75kg and was not at all effective in women who weighed over 80kg.

The European Medicines Agency ordered a label change on 10 November, but it wasn’t previously reported.

A spokesperson for the TGA said they were aware of reports that NorLevo may not work in women weighing more than 80kg and were reviewing the available information to determine whether action was required in Australia.
