What I've learned after 18 years as a volunteer GP treating asylum seekers


Working as a volunteer GP at the Asylum Seekers’ Centre in Sydney for the past 18 years, I’ve witnessed first-hand the challenges faced by this patient group.

One particular patient, Ali*, stands out as an example of what life is like for many refugees. Ali fled the Middle East with his brother first to a camp in a neighbouring country and then on to Australia early last year by plane where he claimed asylum.

The 38-year-old is currently waiting for a hearing before the Administrative Appeals Tribunal,
