Zika: How worried should we be?
ON A world scale, compared to other mosquito-borne infections, Zika virus remains pretty small fry. A commentary in JAMA points to just 1700 cases of Zika infection so far reported on the continental US.
For pregnant women travelling through high-prevalence areas, however, the threat is substantial—enough to revisit travel plans. Zika has now been transmitted via mosquito in nearly all of Central and South America, and in eight Pacific Island nations.
