1. Sugar has different guises

When reading food labels in Australia, patients need to be aware that labels list total sugars, which include intrinsic sugars in foods such as milk. Further. products labelled “no added sugar” may still contain high levels of natural sugars so consumers should always read the nutrition panel, not claims on packaging.
Ingredients must be listed in descending order in terms of weight, so sugar (or any alternative) is a main ingredient if listed in the top three ingredients.1 Always check the per 100g column: where sugar exceeds 15 g per 100 g, check if it is one of the main ingredients.
