CONGENITAL cytomegalovirus (CMV) needs to be on the radar of clinicians and parents as it’s now among the most common causes of hearing loss and malformation in infants, experts say.

An international group of infectious diseases specialists, led by Professor Bill Rawlinson from Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney, has reviewed the medical literature and drawn up recommendations for prevention, diagnosis and treatment of CMV.

Currently no country has introduced universal screening of pregnant women and the informal International Congenital Cytomegalovirus
