5kg gain after quitting raises risk of type 2
Researchers set out to understand the relationship between stopping smoking, weight gain and diabetes risk by examining data on more than 115,000 women with no known diabetes at baseline who were enrolled in the Women’s Health Initiative trial and followed for 8.5 years.
They found the risk of diabetes was increased slightly among current smokers and new quitters compared with never smokers.
But a marked excess risk (67% increase) was seen among the new quitters who gained 5kg or more.
