6 new statistics on psychiatric disorders in men

NEARLY one in three Australian men are likely to develop a psychiatric disorder at some point in their lives, according to clinical interviews with nearly 1000 randomly selected participants in a Victorian osteoporosis study.

The survey of men aged 24–98, published in the Australian & New Zealand Journal of Psychiatry, found that:

  • Approximately 28.8% reported a lifetime history of any psychiatric disorder
  • 18.2% reported a history of mood disorders
  • 12.9% reported a history of substance abuse
  • 7.2% reported a history of anxiety
  • 8.7% met criteria
