Absent WSF1 gene increases diabetes risk

Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress causes dysfunction and loss of beta cells but now researchers say they’ve identified a mechanism.

The WFS1 gene acts as a key link between ER stress and beta cell function.

They’ve shown that the WFS1 gene is crucial to producing the ‘cyclic AMP’ molecule, which helps control the metabolic activities of individual cells. This is likely to be responsible for the much higher rates of diabetes in patients with Wolfram Syndrome, but the researchers say that perhaps partial impairment of the gene
