ACE inhibitors lower rate of new-onset diabetes

The follow-up study to the Second Australian National Blood Pressure Study (ANBP2), to be presented at the Hypertension Sydney conference this week, also found the long-term presence of diabetes was associated with reduced survival in elderly patients.

“The message is, if you can use agents that prevent diabetes for treating hypertension, you are going to have an impact on cardiovascular and all-cause mortality over a 10-year period,” said cardiovascular epidemiologist Professor Christopher Reid of Monash University.
