Acupuncture relieves shortness of breath in patients with COPD

Japanese researchers conducted a 12-week study in 68 patients with COPD, half receiving acupuncture and half receiving a sham treatment.

Using a modified Borg scale, where 0 meant breathing well and 10 signified severe breathlessness, researchers found that patients in the acupuncture group improved scores over the duration of the study from 5.5 to 1.5, whereas those in the placebo group measured 4.2 before treatment and 4.6 after treatment.
