Acute pancreatitis may lead to later glucose intolerance

The first systematic review of hyperglycaemia following acute pancreatitis – involving 24 studies and >1000 participants – found 37% of patients developed prediabetes or diabetes in the five years post-hospital discharge.

The prevalence of diabetes was about 23% following acute pancreatitis, much higher than the general population prevalence (4–9%), the researchers said.

Within 12 months 15% of pancreatitis patients developed diabetes and the risk more than doubled
