ADHD meds not a gateway to later substance abuse

In the biggest review of this issue to date, psychologists analysed 15 longitudinal studies covering 2500 children from the age of eight, finding there was no increased – or decreased – risk of later problematic consumption of alcohol, nicotine, marijuana or cocaine.

The findings should be reassuring to parents as they followed research led by the same author in 2011 suggesting children taking drugs such as methylphenidate were on a trajectory to substance abuse.
