The researchers analysed data from 2005 and found that among the various sources of emissions in the country, car and truck exhaust was the single greatest contributor to premature death, killing 3300 people annually, more than road accidents.

Emissions originating elsewhere in Europe cause an additional 6000 early deaths in the UK annually, while UK emissions that migrate outside the country cause 3100 premature deaths per year in other European Union nations.
