Alcohol and drug addicts’ offspring affected by arthritis

Drawing on a health survey of 13,000 Canadians, researchers found one in five respondents had a diagnosis of arthritis and one in seven reported childhood experience of substance abuse by a parent which caused problems for the family.

Those reporting parental addiction had a 58% increased risk of adult onset arthritis.

The risk was reduced but not eliminated after adjustment for other risk factors such as socioeconomic status, adult health behaviours such as physical inactivity or smoking, and mood or anxiety disorders.
