Allergic gastroenteritis on the rise in babies

Hospital admission for paediatric allergic gastroenteritis has risen fourfold in Australia and New Zealand since the late 1990s, a study shows.

Researchers, led by Dr Ray Mullins from John James Medical Centre in Canberra, sought to determine whether non-IgE mediated food allergy is increasing in line with IgE-mediated food allergy and anaphylaxis.

The researchers trawled through relevant hospital admissions data for children younger than 14 from 1998 through to 2014 in Australia, finding an increase in allergic gastroenteritis admissions of 7.3% a year, from 6.8 per 100,000 to 26.5 per 100
