Alopecia linked to raised auto-immune disease prevalence

Among all patients with alopecia areata seen at Boston hospitals over an 11-year period (>2000), 14.6% also had thyroid disease, 11.1% had diabetes, 6.3% had IBD and 4.3% also had lupus.

The study also found high rates of atopy (38%) and of mental illness (25%).

The researchers suggested screening where appropriate but expert commentary cautioned there was no evidence suggesting routine screening would prevent or reduce morbidity and investigations would increase anxiety.
