Androgen blockade linked to increased risk of kidney injury

In a case-control study drawing on more than 10,000 patients, Canadian researchers found current use of androgen-deprivation therapy (ADT) was significantly associated with a 2.5 times increase in the odds of acute kidney injury.

The researchers said testosterone suppression could lead to a hypogonadal condition affecting renal function.

They cautioned that the threshold for initiating ADT was being lowered, whereas in the past its use was confined to patients with advanced disease.
