Anti-smoking drugs a safety concern

The TGA announced last week that it was updating the PI for bupropion (Clorprax, Prexaton and Zyban SR) to recommend doctors exercise care when these products are prescribed for patients with pre-existing hypertension or those concurrently using nicotine patches.

“There have been reports of patients receiving bupropion (alone and in combination with nicotine replacement therapy) experiencing severe hypertension requiring acute treatment, in patients both with and without pre-existing hypertension,” the TGA said in a Medicines Safety Update.
