Anti-vaccination stance may be fuelling pertussis cases

Although the resurgence of pertussis in the US has been largely attributed to waning immunity due to use of the acellular vaccine, researchers say their analysis of nonmedical exemptions for children entering kindergarten over five years in California suggests refusal adds to the problem.

Their study – which covered 9143 cases of pertussis in 2010 – found populations in geographic areas with high rates of non-vaccination had 2.5 times the likelihood of being in a pertussis cluster.
