Antibiotic can induce oesophagitis

Younger patients with painful swallowing should be asked whether they’re on doxycycline as it could be causing oesophagitis, says a Queensland pathologist.

Dr Ian Brown from Envoi Specialist Pathologists in Brisbane says doxycycline is increasingly prescribed in young patients with acne, STIs or respiratory tract infections.

In such patients, symptoms such as odynophagia or dysphagia can be mistakenly interpreted as reflux because
