The exposure-based therapy uses back-and-forth eye movements that minimise the physiological response as the patient recalls traumatic memories.

The therapy also involves re-envisioning painful or disturbing experiences by ‘replacing’ distressing images with more positive ones.
Treatment consisted of between one and five one-hour sessions over three weeks; 66 participants completed the full treatment regime, with 54 completing two-month follow-up assessments as well.
