Artificial pancreas review shows benefits over insulin-pump therapy

An artificial pancreas significantly improves glycaemic control while reducing hypoglycaemia in patients with type 1 diabetes, according to a systematic review.

Researchers analysed 40 randomised controlled trials comparing use of an artificial pancreas, also known as a closed-loop glucose control system, with insulin-based treatment.

Compared with the control therapy, patients using the artificial pancreas were in the near-normoglycaemic range of 3.9-10 mmol/L for 10% more time per 24 hours and for 15% more time overnight.
