Asbestos-related deaths soar in past decade

Analysis of claims data for the period 1997–2010 shows 70% of the increase in work-related deaths has been due to asbestos exposure, researchers say.

Mesothelioma claims have risen 216%, lung cancer claims by 575% and claims for other cancers by 512% during the period studied.

Thousands of construction workers remain vulnerable, although the issue is off the public health radar, researchers say.
