Asthma improves after surgery for apnoea
IN A case-control study, they found that acute asthma exacerbations and severe asthma attacks declined significantly among 13,500 children with asthma who underwent adenotonsillectomy compared to 27,000 children with asthma who did not have the procedure.
The findings supported the possibility that OSA aggravates underlying asthma and adenotonsillectomy might reduce the need for intensive intervention with medication, the authors said.
Prospective trials would be necessary to establish a causal relationship, the researchers concluded.
