Aussie helps develop four-stage hypoglycaemia guide

International researchers including an Australian have developed a four-stage algorithm to help doctors tackle severe hypoglycaemia in patients with type 1 diabetes.

The aim is to balance individualised therapy with a composite target of optimal glucose control, report University of Melbourne specialist Prof Thomas Kay and colleagues.

Stage one is for all patients with problematic hypoglycaemia to undergo structured or hypoglycaemia-specific education programs.

Glycaemic and hypoglycaemic target treatments are then individualised and reassessed every three to six months. This has the support of previous trials showing such programs can reduce severe
