Aussie travel surge raises fears dengue may become endemic

Researchers from Queensland Health Forensic and Scientific Services said the issue was of major public health importance and had been exacerbated by the heightened frequency and affordability of air travel.

A trend of increasing dengue virus (DENV) outbreaks and increasing diversity of serotypes was identified by examining data over 20 years.

Researchers analysed samples from 140 diagnosed cases with a history of travel between 2002 and 2010. Some 42.9% of instances of virus importation identified in the study occurred in 2010.
