Aussies lead the world in drug use
According to the latest United Nations World Drug Report, Australians are the highest users of ecstasy in the world, with 3% of the population reporting regular use. New Zealand ranked second at 2.6%.
While the trend for ecstasy use appears to be declining in Australia, an increase in the consumption of cannabis, cocaine, hallucinogens, and solvents and inhalants was observed.
The report attributes the worrying trend to the wide range of synthetic drugs and new psychoactive substances that are currently available in the Australian illicit drug market.
Ranking consistently high among all recreational drug categories, Australia comes in third for use of methamphetamines, fourth for cocaine and seventh for cannabis.
Australians are the second highest users of prescribed opioids, with 3.1–3.6% of people aged between 15 and 65, and mostly women, reporting regular use.
