Australia trails other countries on pertussis vaccination

The Report Card: The wellbeing of young Australians released today showed although 93% of children are fully immunised at two years, Australia ranks 29 out of 33 OECD countries for pertussis coverage.

Summarising the findings, Professor Fiona Stanley, said the 28% of indicators where Australia was in the bottom third of OECD countries were of considerable concern.

“I am alarmed that, in spite of opportunities, we are in the lowest third for whooping cough vaccination,” she wrote. “Do we need an epidemic to frighten parents into vaccinating?”
