Bariatric surgery reduces the risk of type 2: study
Bariatric surgery such as gastric bypass or banding could reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes by around 80% in obese people compared with standard care, according to research published in The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology.
The study compares the outcomes of 2,167 obese adults who underwent bariatric surgery with the same number of controls who did not have surgery or other obesity treatments.
After a median of 2.8 years (maximum seven) of follow up, 38 in the surgery group had developed diabetes compared with 177 in the control group.
