Barmah cases overtaking influenza

In the last two-week period of notification, 289 cases of the infection have been reported across Australia – more than the number of laboratory-confirmed influenza cases – compared with only 61 for the same period last year.

Associate Professor Vitali Sintchenko, of the Centre for Infectious Diseases and Microbiology at Westmead Hospital, NSW, said previous increases in activity were associated with floods.

“There has been an increase in activity in many different areas, almost simultaneously, which does not happen very often,&rdquo
