Barmah Forest cases overtaking flu

In the last two-week period of notification, 289 cases of the infection have been reported across Australia - more than the number of laboratory-confirmed influenza cases - compared with only 61 for the same period last year.

More than 1800 cases have been reported in the last quarter, greater than three times the rolling five-year mean.

Symptoms of the mosquito-born illness include acute onset of fever, arthralgia and a florid maculopapular erythematous rash, after an incubation period of 5–21 days, according to a Communicable Diseases Intelligence
