Benefits and side-effects for kids on metformin
VERY obese children can benefit from metformin, but they may experience gastrointestinal side-effects, according to the results of a randomised double-blind placebo-controlled trial of 100 children aged 6–12.
Severely obese, insulin-resistant children taking metformin while participating in a six-month low-intensity weight loss program had significantly better outcomes in terms of BMI and weight loss, as well as fasting plasma glucose and insulin resistance, than did children in the same program who did not take the drug.
The intervention group experienced more gastrointestinal side-effects, however, with 17% unable to take the maximum dose.
The benefits of metformin plateaued after six months.
