Beware hip osteoarthritis in elite sportsmen

Elite sportsmen who play high impact, twisting games such as handball, soccer and hockey are up to nine times more likely to develop osteoarthritis (OA) of the hip, a literature review shows.

But top level runners may be safe from the elevated risks, with inconsistent findings among these long-distance athletes.

Handball players face the highest risk of developing OA of the hip -- five times
