‘Biggest change to diabetes in a century’

Bariatric surgery should be considered a standard treatment option for many obese patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) according to an internationally agreed guideline set to dramatically change practice.

A new consensus statement, endorsed by the Australian Diabetes Society, suggests metabolic surgery become a recommended first-line option for patients with T2DM and BMI >40kg/m2 regardless of their glycaemic control.
