Biopsy quality key to bladder cancer survival

Bladder cancer patients who have biopsies that do not include muscle wall material have significantly reduced survival, report US researchers.

Their retrospective study of over 1,800 biopsies showed that in around half of them, muscle wall tissue was absent or not mentioned, even though muscle wall invasion is a key biomarker in invasive bladder cancer.

Lack of muscle wall tissue in the biopsy led to directly lower survival rates, the researchers from the University of California found.
