Bisphosphonates for hyperparathyroidism up fracture risk

Treating hyperparathyroidism with bisphosphonates leads to a greater risk of fracture, compared with surgery or no treatment, say US researchers.

Data from more than 6000 people diagnosed with hyperparathyroidism shows patients taking bisphosphonates had a rate of hip fractures of 86 per 1,000 people after 10 years.

This contrasts with 56 hip fractures per 1,000 patients who received no treatment.
