Blood glucose in ED a pointer to diabetes

THE study in 86,000 ED patients showed that after three years, the risk of developing type 2 diabetes was less than 1% for those with blood glucose less than or equal to 5mmol/L, 2.6% at 7mmol/L, 9.9% at 11.1mmol/L and rose to 15% at 15mmol/L.

However, the risk of diabetes was halved in patients aged 30–39 at the same blood glucose levels.

Mortality was also 50% higher in patients with blood glucose levels 11.1mmol/L and higher on emergency admission than those with blood glucose less than 6.1mmol/L.
