BMI an inaccurate measure of obesity

Doctors who use body mass index to diagnose childhood obesity may be missing over a quarter of all cases, US researchers say.

The common screening tool fails to identify excess body fat in 27% of children and adolescents according to the review and meta-analysis published in Pediatric Obesity.

“We very well may be missing a large group of children who potentially could be at risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes as they get older,” said lead author and paediatrician Dr Asma Javed of the Mayo
