Bone fragility overdiagnosis claim ‘ridiculous

Bone fragility is being overdiagnosed and there’s too much reliance on pharmacotherapy to prevent hip fracture, a group of researchers are claiming in a controversial analysis published by the BMJ.
The authors, from several countries including Australia, say their meta-analysis shows evidence is scant for use of bisphosphonates in people older than 75 and they raise concerns about side-effects.
Current strategies for stratifying hip fracture risk and prescribing drug treatment are “neither viable as a public health strategy nor cost effective”, they say.
However two Australian endocrinologists dispute the researchers’ conclusions.
