BP control has long-lasting benefits in diabetes

A five-year period of intensive blood pressure control has long-lasting benefits for older people with long-standing type 2 diabetes, according to a follow-up to the Australian-led ADVANCE study.

The combination of perindopril and indapamide used in the study reduced mortality after treatment ended, according to the results of the six-year follow-up.

Intensive treatment targeting a glycated haemoglobin level of less than 6.5% did not reduce mortality or macrovascular events. It did, however, have a positive effect on end-stage renal disease.
