Brain degeneration linked to duration of diabetes: study

US researchers analysed images from 614 patients with diabetes (mean age 62), finding longer duration of the disease and higher fasting plasma glucose levels were associated with brain atrophy, particularly of grey matter.

The results suggested that for every 10 years of diabetes, a patient’s brain looks on average two years older, in terms of volume, than the brain of someone without diabetes.

Contrary to common belief there was no association between diabetes control and small vessel ischaemic disease in the brain.
