Breast screening backlash hits Switzerland

The Swiss Medical Board has recommended no further systematic mammography screening programs be implemented and existing ones be wound back in a report that has sparked a storm of controversy.

Released earlier this month, the report conceded screening reduced mortality slightly, with one to two fewer women dying of breast cancer per thousand screened.

But this small benefit was offset by the problem of overdiagnosis and subsequent overtreatment, which afflicted around 100 women
