Is breastfeeding protective in AS?

Newborns who are bottle-fed are more likely to develop ankylosing spondylitis in later life than their breastfed siblings, according to French researchers.

The study – the first to look at the effect of newborn feeding on AS onset – involved 119 families in which at least one sibling had HLA-B27-positive AS. It found 57% of AS siblings were breastfed, compared with 72% of siblings without the condition.
