Bronchiolitis risk increased by folic acid supplements

As data from animal studies link folate to child respiratory diseases, US researchers examined data from a cohort of more than 160,000 women and their babies.

Compared with infants born to women who did not take folic acid, those born to women who filled a prescription for 1000µg folic acid after the fifth to sixth week of pregnancy had a 17% increased risk of bronchiolitis diagnosis.

Adequate folate was needed to prevent neural tube defects but more research was now needed on optimal dosage and timing, the authors said.
